VA benefits and private life insurance

You do not have to choose a starting point blindly. First understand the protection you already have.

Different programs serve different needs

VA and military life insurance programs have different eligibility rules, enrollment windows, benefit amounts, and premium structures. Private policies also vary. A useful review looks at your actual policy documents alongside your family’s needs.

VGLI and VALife are different

VGLI is renewable term insurance for eligible former servicemembers, with time limits for enrollment after separation. VALife is guaranteed-acceptance whole life for eligible veterans with service-connected disabilities, with a waiting period for the full death benefit. Check the VA’s official pages for your circumstances.

Compare more than a monthly price

Look at the benefit amount, when full coverage begins, future premiums, exclusions, and how long protection lasts. Private coverage is subject to its own eligibility and underwriting rules. Neither a government program nor a private policy is automatically the best fit for everyone.

Review before replacing

A new policy can have different terms, new contestability provisions, or a waiting period. Existing coverage may have valuable guarantees. Discuss these details before making a change, and never assume a submitted application means new coverage is active.
